Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society
One of the oldest choirs in Wales, Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. It currently has over 100 members from all walks of life. Since the choral society’s formation in 1938, LCCS has been a major force in the city's musical life, and has given three major concerts and carol services each year at Llandaff Cathedral. The choir has performed with noted conductors such as Vernon Handley and Charles Groves, and with soloists such as Robert Tear, Michael George, Ian Bostridge, James Bowman, and Catherine Bott. With Principal Conductor Dominic Neville, the choral society has continued to perform repertoire ranging from Bach Mass in B Minor to Britten Saint Nicolas and beyond, and in the summer of 2012, LCCS undertook its first tour abroad, singing at the magnificent church of Saint Sulpice in Paris, and Fauré Requiem at the composer's own church, the Madeleine, on Bastille Day. Another ‘first’ for the choral society in its 75th anniversary year was the choir’s first broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
The choir has recently sung in collaboration with the Philadelphia Boys Choir (USA) at Hoddinott Hall, and has performed Vivaldi Gloria, Monterverdi Beatus Vir and Haydn Kleine Orgel Messe in Ghent Cathedral in Belgium. The choir’s performance at Bruges Cathedral received a standing ovation from a capacity audience. Closer to home, LCCS has given a “Family Messiah” performance hosted by Classic FM’s Catherine Bott, and most recently performed Verdi Requiem with Crickhowell Choral Society at Llandaff Cathedral.
The Associate Conductor of LCCS is Alexander Thacker, and he conducted the choir’s annual carol service, including the newly commissioned Et Incarnatus Est by the composer and LCCS tenor Ben Heneghan. The choir welcomes Philip May as its new accompanist, and is delighted to be collaborating with Owain Arwel Hughes at the Welsh Proms Cymru, following their Passion Sunday collaboration at Llandaff Cathedral with Camerata Wales and the Wales International Academy of Voice at Easter 2016.
